The Threat is Real!

Don't let your organization be held for ransom

The Threat is Real… Are You Protected?

According to an annual report published by the security team at SonicWall, their Global Response Intelligence Grid saw around 3.8 million ransomware attacks attempted in 2015, around 19% over 2014.  However, in 2016 that number jumped to over 638 million attacks, a whopping 168 times that of 2015!

What is Ransomware? According to Microsoft, there are different types of ransomware. However, all of them will prevent you from using your PC normally, and they will all ask you to do something before you can use your PC. They can target any PC users, whether it’s a home computer, endpoints in an enterprise network, or servers used by a government agency or healthcare provider” and typically enter from “innocent” emails from UPS or Fed Ex for example.

SAMPLE OF MALWARE NOTICE:

Why Should You Care? Ransomware will demand that you pay money (a “ransom”) to get access to your PC or files. According to SonicWall’s report, $209 million in ransomware were paid in Q1 of 2016 alone.  The worst part is there is no guarantee that paying the fine or doing what the ransomware tells you will give access to your PC or files again.

Solution to Prevention? With the speed at which employees are moving that even the watchful eye can find themselves making a wrong click.  Our recommendation is to go on the defensive and be prepared for the worst.  These 5 things make a great start to warding off attacks”:

  1. Use an enterprise approved Firewall with Filters
  2. Back up often and test restore of your backups
  3. Update and run all patches on network and locally
  4. Clean up Active Directory
  5. Have published security policies for your organization
